In 9th grade, I won a Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day essay contest in the city of Erie, PA. Twenty miles away in my one-stoplight town, my principal displayed my essay in the school showcase. A manifesto of hope within the four walls that had taught me so much about intolerance. I felt exposed in the most thrilling way. It was the first time I experienced the power of my words.
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was a student of Gandhi. They saw the suffering of the world but didn’t fall into the pit of despair; they pulled people out. Today, I celebrate all the changemakers pulling us out. Those who dare to dream of a world we can not imagine.
